Our 1st Fair Queen was crowned in 1947, Anna Tidwell. Following in 1948 was Maxie Fairburn McLin. In the early years many organizations in the Parish sponsored contestants. Both Tidwell and Fairburn were sponsored by the Young Men’s Business Club of Livingston. Each organization put out collection jars in the community for their contestant. As fair week approached, people would show their support by dropping money in the jars. The contestant with the most donations was declared the Queen. According to Mrs. McLin she received a wrist watch for her prize.
Records are not clear when the actual pageant, as we know it today, was held. Sometime in the late 50’s, girls modeled and were judged by a panel of judges. The preschool pageant began in 1968 as a spur of the moment decision. Children were brought in from the fairgrounds and judged. Each dressed in what they wore to the fair. Entry fee was five dollars per child. The winners received a stuffed animal donated by the carnival.
Pageants have long been a tradition at the fair. Past directors of record are Joyce Allen Lambert, Eleanor May, Naomi Harrell, Mary Bertrand, Yolanda Buuck, Jodi McCleary, Kim Benge, Lynn Sibley, Kym Ferachi,
and current chairman Yolanda Buuck. Each of these ladies have served tirelessly to keep this tradition alive and flourishing.
The title of Livingston Parish Fair Queen is still a coveted title. Our senior queen represents us throughout the year at many fairs and festivals throughout the state. She also competes at the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals Queen of Queens pageant. As our representative of all things “FAIR” the queen is awarded a cash prize of $1,000 at the successful completion of her reign.
Thankful for many committee members and directors along the way who have worked tirelessly to make the pageant what it is today.
